Ceylon cinnamon, the safe species
Ceylon cinnamon, commonly named “the true cinnamon” is one of the 2 common cinnamon species next to cassia cinnamon. A notable difference between the 2 species is their coumarin content. Coumarin is a potentially natural harmful molecule which may pose health risks if consumed excessively (anticoagulant properties). Ceylon cinnamon only contains traces of coumarin and is entirely safe for consumption whereas cassia cinnamon contains higher levels of coumarin and may present risks to individuals if consumed in significant quantities on a regular basis.

Published human clinical data
Post-meal blood glucose decreased by more than 20% with MealShape®
After multiple preclinical trials showing a strong and consistent efficacy on postprandial glycemia, MealShape® was studied in a randomized, cross-over, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial1. Healthy female and male volunteers were given MealShape® or a placebo (2 capsules of 500 mg) before eating a standard meal (white bread) after an overnight fast. Glycemia and insulinemia were measured over 2 hours after bread consumption.
MealShape® significantly reduced glycemia by more than 20% after a meal without stimulating insulin secretion.

MealShape® was well tolerated as no side effects appeared during the study. The ingredient may be of interest for people looking for natural solutions to manage post-meal blood glucose and body weight without side effects.

Mechanism of action
MealShape® delays the digestion and the absorption of carbohydrates by inhibiting alpha-amylase activity. This pancreatic enzyme breaks down starch into sugars which are absorbed by the organism.
Proof of concept in bread
MealShape® was incorporated and cooked in a French baguette. The effect on postprandial glycemia was studied in preclinical trials. The results demonstrated a significant dose-related effect: the glycemic index of bread containing 0.5% MealShape® significantly decreased by 30%.
MealShape® has the property to lower the Glycemic Index of starchy foods. This can support consumers to follow a low GI diet for a better control of blood sugar and body weight.
